IT Project Manager

The IT Project Manager is an expert responsible for proposing and implementing a technical response adapted to IT specifications linked to the activity, environment and users of a company.
It intervenes from the study phase: it must define the customer needs, the necessary time to the realization of the project and the budget correspondent, write the Specifications and build the team in charge of the project.
His role then focuses more specifically on monitoring deadlines, as well as on budget and quality. He is responsible on a daily basis for the progress of the project. Once this is finished, he participates in his setting up and may need to manage its improvements.

Depending on whether he works in a user company or in a computer engineering services company (SSII), and depending on the size of these structures, its activities and responsibilities may vary.
In some cases, the IT Technical Project Manager reports to an IT director and works in conjunction with a functional Project Manager, in others, he acts alone (and must be versatile) or with a team on behalf of a client company.


MAIN ACTIVITIES :

The main activities of the IT Technical Project Manager consist of:
  • Manage projects of different levels of complexity based on existing methods, processes and tools;
  • Analyze the client's needs, advise him and actively clarify his expectations and requirements;
  • Create and maintain the project definition, project charter, project plan and bids, support the creation of the statement of work;
  • Obtain necessary project approvals, project and customer order agreements and actively manage project finances;
  • Plan, monitor, control and report on project progress to the project management leadership and, where appropriate, bring issues up to the next level;
  • Ensure compliance with deadlines and budget, quality of project results and satisfaction of customers and stakeholders.
SKILLS AND QUALITIES:

The IT Project Manager must be able to understand the environment and business activities where he practices, and user needs and constraints. He must also:
  • Know the relevant products and services, as well as internal standards, processes, rules and procedures (e.g. NBM);
  • Know the technical architectures;
  • Know the processes and methods of project management (planning, budget, etc.) and computer tools such as MS Project;
  • Possess skills in consulting, organizational transformation and change management;
  • Master technical English in an international environment.

EDUCATION:

To become an IT Project Manager, it is necessary to obtain a minimum bac +2/3 diploma (DUT, BTS, professional license) specializing in IT, networks and telecommunications or, better yet, a bac +5 diploma such as:
  • Engineering schools (IT, telecoms, generalist)
  • Master 2 specializing in IT, networks and telecommunications

However, a three to five years prior experience as a development engineer, technical consultant or functional consultant is generally required to access this type of position.
